Applicability: Ships and Floating Offshore Units using Remote Inspection Techniques (RIT) for close-up surveys
From 1 January 2019, the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) requires a firm being used to provide Remote Inspection Techniques (RIT) for Close-up Surveys to be approved as a Service Supplier.
LR’s Procedures for the Approval of Service Suppliers have been updated to include the following new category - 'Firms Engaged in Surveys using Remote Inspection Techniques (RIT) as an Alternative Means for Close-up Survey of the Structure of Ships and Mobile Offshore Units’.
A Remote Inspection Technique (RIT) enables examination of any part of the structure without the need for direct physical access of the Surveyor, and may include the use of:
- Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV)
- Drones
- Unmanned robot arms
- Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV)
- Climbers and crawlers
- Other means acceptable to Lloyd’s Register
Firms performing Close-up Surveys using ‘Rope Access Technicians’ will also require approval in accordance with this new category of Service Supplier.
RIT firms wishing to undertake Thickness Measurements as well as Close-up Surveys will also require approval in accordance with the Service Supplier category of ‘Thickness Measurements on Ships and Mobile Offshore Units’.
