Statutory alert: Cosmo Co. Ltd – Fire door safety notice
Applicability: Owners and operators of vessels fitted with Cosmo Co. Ltd fire doors
Cosmo Co. Ltd has issued a Notice Letter and a Root Cause Analysis of a quality issue that has been discovered in a number of fire doors that they manufacture, including doors rated A-60, A-0 and B-15. Following an internal investigation, it was found that various delivered products had some insulation partly missing from inside the door. Due to this partly missing insulation, the doors do not comply with their type approval certification.
The investigation found that this was partially due to new manufacturing equipment and processes that were introduced in November 2013. As a result, any door produced since then may be affected.
Cosmo Co. Ltd has outlined a method in order to check doors already installed to establish whether or not they are affected.
Cosmo Co. Ltd has been carrying out fire tests on doors with irregular insulation arrangements, in order to establish whether or not they meet the requirements of SOLAS. So far, doors A-0SB, A-0SDV, B-15SVH, B-15HNR and B-15HNRV have been found to meet the requirements of SOLAS, with further fire tests on other A-60 type doors ongoing.
What should owners and operators do now?
Owners and operators of vessels fitted with any Cosmo Co. Ltd fire doors should check with the manufacturer for information on whether they are affected or not. If found to be affected by this issue, please contact your local Lloyd’s Register (LR) office for further advice. LR will be contacting owners and operators of vessels known to be affected by this issue.
